Riding for Surf Therapy: Waves for Change at the 2026 Cape Town Cycle Tour
On 8 March 2026, a team of Waves for Change riders joined thousands of cyclists for one of the world’s most iconic cycle races, the Cape Town Cycle Tour — pedalling not only for the challenge and thrill of the race, but for a shared purpose: supporting children and adolescents’ mental health through Surf Therapy.
Seven riders including our Ambassador and Co-Founder, Apish Tshetsha, proudly wore the Waves for Change logo as they took on the scenic route around the Cape Peninsula, challenging themselves physically while fundraising along the way to support the Surf Therapy Programme. In typical Cape Town style, the race day weather conditions were challenging, sweltering sun and the infamous Cape wind made for a tough ride. But all seven riders crossed the finish line, and we’re incredibly proud of each of them.
More Than a Race
For Waves for Change, the Cape Town Cycle Tour has always been more about the race and crossing the finish line. This year was no different. This race is an opportunity to showcase Waves for Change as a proud partner in physical activity and wellbeing.
Behind the scenes, the Waves for Changes team had set up a finish-line picnic area — a relaxed, welcoming space where riders, families, and friends could decompress and reconnect after the race. It made all the difference. Everyone used the occasion to have meaningful conversations, deepen relationships and reinforce why community is central to the Waves for Change ethos.
In true Waves for Change style, the cycle tour excitement didn’t stop at the finish line. Two days later, our cyclists gathered at the Muizenberg site for a post-tour surf session, this time, riding a different kind of wave and carrying the momentum of the weekend into the water.
Thanks to the unwavering spirit of our riders, the generosity of donors, friends, and supporters, the cycle team raised a significant sum that will go directly toward continuing and growing the programme. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who contributed.
