Strengthening Communities Through Caregiver Connection in the Eastern Cape
Caregiver sessions brought families, coaches, and communities together to deepen understanding, strengthen relationships, and support children’s wellbeing through shared experiences.
In May this year, Waves for Change hosted a series of Caregiver Sessions across the Eastern Cape in East London and Gqeberha, creating opportunities for families to engage directly with the Surf Therapy experience their children participate in . Caregivers joined coaches and young participants for interactive activities, conversations, and moments of shared learning. The sessions were filled with laughter, play, and meaningful interaction as parents and caregivers stepped into their children’s world, experiencing firsthand the activities and approaches used within the programme.
Children thrive when the people around them feel connected, informed, and supported. These Caregiver Sessions highlighted the important role families play in promoting young people’s wellbeing. By creating a space where caregivers could learn alongside their children, ask questions, and engage with coaches, the sessions strengthened relationships and deepened understanding of the value of Surf Therapy. The experience reinforced a powerful message: supporting children’s emotional wellbeing is a shared responsibility, and when families and communities work together, young people are better equipped to grow with confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
One of the most memorable themes to emerge from the sessions was togetherness. Across each gathering, caregivers and children participated side by side, learning through play and shared experiences. Parents proudly participated in activities their children had already mastered, while conversations about inclusion, belonging, and community unfolded naturally throughout the day – Annelissa Mhloli ( Social Worker at Waves for Change (W4C).“
As families shared experiences and coaches facilitated meaningful engagement, the sessions became more than just an activity they became a celebration of community. The openness of caregivers, the enthusiasm of coaches, and the joy of families learning together offered a powerful reminder that lasting impact happens when everyone feels seen, valued, and connected.
